The USS Monitor
The USS Monitor, an iconic ironclad warship, holds a significant place in American naval history. Commissioned by the Union Navy during the American Civil War, the Monitor was designed by the Swedish engineer John Ericsson and was the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States. Its revolutionary design featured a rotating turret housing a pair of massive cannons, offering enhanced firepower and maneuverability compared to traditional wooden warships.
